I asked veteran blogger, pundit, podcaster, friend of Ann Coulter and border security hardliner Mickey Kaus to join the #pod after a tongue-and-cheek tweet tossed at me following my description of South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace as “increasingly compelling.”
Kaus says he was just joking, of course. But the point is that he recoils at Republicans who talk out of both sides of their mouth on immigration. For instance, while Nance ran a hardline TV ad on immigration during her 2022 primary campaign — “Enough is enough. Finish the wall, secure our border, once and for all,” she declared. — she’s now warning the GOP against passing any legislation that is border obsessed.
Kaus calls her an “incipient sell-out.”
I brought him on to talk about why he believes so strongly in a policy that first focuses on the border before granting any more amnesty or citizenship. We also take a tour through the 2024 GOP hopefuls of Nikki Haley, Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump and evaluate how much they can be trusted if you’re a fellow hardliner.
Aside from Kaus’ immigration report card, I think this pod helps illuminate why a Democrat — a Democrat from California who is sympathetic to the economic strife of the middle class — has established such a hardline position that is often politicized and misunderstood.
