And our current Senators and Representatives in both parties have done such an amazing job of representing the citizens who elected them? It’s broken, both parties are led by grifters. We are in serious trouble. We have to hope someone emerges that has integrity. As Bob Dylan wrote “It’s not dark yet, but it’s getting there.”
Unfortunately the author misses the point. It makes sense that Governors are poor candidates, as they are used to campaigning on a smaller scale to a more regionally homogenous culture. What sells in one region of the country is more difficult to communicate nationally. The effectiveness of Governors as Presidents compared to Legislators is that Governors can bring a complete team to the White House instead of trying to find department heads they have never worked with, between Labor Day before the election till January after the election. That worked great for Carter & Reagan (and even better for Bush Sr. who largely kept the same team. In the 20th century we created the need for a team of seasoned executives who were comfortable working together to run huge departments. Governors are the only folks in the public sector who have experience managing team dynamics and the egos of powerful, successful people on that level.
Newsom will be a distant memory, if anyone recalls him in 2027. Newsom's ego will diminish any chance he may have had to be a serious or successful donkey in four years. Add in the fact that most of the USA populace dislikes New Yorkers and Californian, Newsom is doomed long before he'll become a serious donkey contender, much less threat. Incidentally, the donkey bench appears limited, if not empty.

I think Ronald Reagan was successful. Curious omission by the author.
