President Biden’s re-election campaign is planning to elevate some of the country’s most seminal anniversaries in order to stoke existential fright about the consequences of Donald Trump reclaiming the presidency in 2024.

  • The Jan. 6th U.S. Capitol riot.

  • The Jan. 22nd anniversary of Roe v. Wade.

  • The 2015 Emanuel AME Church massacre in Charleston, S.C.

During a call with reporters on Tuesday evening, Biden campaign officials pinpointed the three events as conduits to amplify their broader argument against Trump, which campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez characterized as a crusade to protect democracy and freedom.

The call, the contents of which were embargoed until Wednesday morning, put to rest any question about how much of the Biden re-election strategy would center around the 45th president.

The answer: Close to all of it.

Nowhere on this call did Chavez Rodriguez, deputy campaign manager Quentin Fulks or communications director Michael Tyler mention “Bidenomics”, falling inflation, “Build Back Better” or the infrastructure bill. Nor did they spend a minute of time on what policies Biden would pursue if granted four more years.

Still in the opening innings, but playing from behind, the Biden command made certain that the effectiveness of their campaign will be whether they can once again disqualify Trump with just enough independents and moderate Republicans to slide through with a slim Electoral College victory.

It’ll be dark, very Dark — and Brandon, if they have it their way, will be a supporting actor, not the leading role.
