Hello fellow consumers,
It’s almost spring break (#MMW…IYKYK) but …
Passing along two recent podcast appearances, both touching on separate but intertwined topics I’ve previously devoted space to here: The frailty of our government.
On Breaking Battlegrounds, I talked about my experience being assigned to write an obituary for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell following his fall that induced an injury of which he is still recovering from. (It’s :44 minutes in.)
On Star Spangled Gamblers, I spat analysis on the fragile plight of Sen. John Fetterman, who is undergoing therapy for clinical depression as he simultaneously recovers from a near-fatal stroke. (Just :4 minutes in)
The public lacks a clear-eyed sense of the extent of both man’s malady(ies?). We’re simply counting on statements from their respective offices, which are purely incentivized to paint the most optimistic picture while fully controlling the information released.
These are humans before they are politicians and each should be granted grace and allowed ample time for recovery. But they are not private citizens — so their health is our business. And no one — I mean no one — is 100% fully transparent about their health to even their closest friends. Imagine having to lay the hard truth out publicly. Who among us wouldn’t hold back?
With a single seat partisan split in the Senate, the fate and longevity of both McConnell and Fetterman are stories of enormous political consequence (Dianne Feinstein, 89, has shingles) even though they have nothing to do with Ron DeSantis fingering pudding cups.
