Fly on the wall on a DeSantis call
Two hundred DeSantis delegates convene on a Zoom a month after.
On Tuesday evening, I was alerted via text of an email from Ron DeSantis’ political operation from a friendly source.
“YOU’RE INVITED: TOMORROW, Feb. 21st Delegate Thank You Call with Governor DeSantis”
“DeSantis!!!
Weird.”
— texted the source.
More interesting than odd, but I was grateful nonetheless for the non-transferable email that was almost certainly to be transferred elsewhere.
I wasn’t intended to be invited, of course, but once I submitted the form attached to the link provided by my source on Wednesday afternoon, I received my access link for the Zoom in another email.
CONFIRMED: TODAY 3 PM ET — Delegate Thank You Zoom
I indeed had access to conference call that had some amount of intrigue attached to it.
Why was DeSantis huddling with his delegates a month after suspending his 2024 campaign? Would the GOV delicately signal to his most fervent supporters to keep their alliance to him until the Milwaukee convention? Was this a sign Ron believed Trump was going to be headed to prison in the coming months?
A sleepy campaign season makes fertile breeding ground for boredom and wily speculation.
The email from Team DeSantis conveyed that it was simply a call to thank would-be delegates for their support and commitment. Ho-hum.
The confirmation email also screamed that it was “CLOSED press.” Now that’s worth lurking in on.
The initial back-and-forth between DeSantis and about 240 or his would-be delegates was picayune.
It’s only when DeSantis opened it up for questions that the call got spicy, with Ron weighing in on Trump’s running mate, the 2024 cash gap, his enduring beef with right-wing media, and of course 2028.
Thanks to my source and to the DeSantis delegates for turning a deadbeat call into something newsworthy!
