An Alabama proxy war with Trump on the sidelines
In this Senate Republican primary, it's more about Mitch McConnell than Don.
With the Georgia Republican gubernatorial primary looking like a rout for incumbent Brian Kemp, the most compelling GOP primary of the night is unfolding right now in Alabama, where hardline Rep. Mo Brooks is trying to secure a slot in the U.S. Senate runoff after losing former President Donald Trump’s endorsement.
Katie Britt, a telegenic 40-year-old, who has impressed Washington Republican insiders with her charisma and campaign savvy, holds a slight lead according to final polls. A third candidate, former military pilot Mike Durant, is competing with Brooks for the June runoff slot.
But if no candidate gets to 50% + 1 and it is Britt vs. Brooks for another four weeks, which creates a tricky decision for Trump.
